Hi Peter and Everyone...

It's been a long time since we spoke. Missed you and hope all is well. My question is a simple one. How do I highlight a web site when sending an email.

My Mac is OS 10.4.11

Mozilla FireFox 3.6.18

WebMail for email

Nothing that I tried in preferences seems to be able to highlight the addresses

Using Java

...and here is a new problem. I keep getting Error Console messages that I keep erasing.

Hi,

Firstly before I forget it is important to be aware of the recent JAVA flashback trojan concerns.

Here is one link on Macintouch but just do google searches for "flashback"
http://www.macintouc...html#d10apr2012

On your question, I am not clezr what you mean by "highlight a web site" other than to me how do you include a link to a website in an email but that is not difficult so please explain.

To include a link to a site, just go to the URL in the top of most browsers, copy, go to email, then paste.

Ideally put < and > at both ends of a URL so it remains clickable no matter what email program you are using.

Hi peter...Yes I sure wasn't clear about what my post meant. When sending an email with an address within the copy (example) newyorkboy22@earthlink.net I would like that address to be highlighted so all people would have to do is click on the highlighted newyorkboy22@earthlink.net

I think you answered my question without my even being clear. In the past all I had to do was just type the addy and in doing that it would be highlighted automatically.Your way sounds more up to date and will help me reach my goal.

I will take your advice on your other suggestions.

Thanks so much.

The word "highlighted" was confusing in your example although I got the gist of your need which is good. Some email programs do not NEED the open and closed brackets on each end in order to maintain the ability for the reader to just click on it and take you to the page.

HOWEVER, in those programs that need them without using them, a URL may not be clickable although one can always copy the URL and paste it into a web browser.

The worst case though is when a long URL is included which now goes to two lines and if you click on it without brackets, it only copies top line of the URL and results in a dead link or wrong link.

As I said, different email programs result in different results as to keeping a URL "whole" and clickable if done without those brackets.

Not only that but different OS platforms with different email clients can have different results so the habit I got into a long time ago was to use those brackets no matter what
to ensure it works on all platforms and in all email programs AND in both plain text or html styled messages.

A VERY short URL - under 35 characters or so, may work 95% of the time without brackets in emails.

LOTS of people, do not bother to do this "courtesy", even very techno-savvy types but it is so easy to do I say why not?

Hi Peter...

Well I'm sorry to report that both WebMail & Yahoo email won't highlight an addy...with or without open and closed brackets. I spoke to a Webmail rep who took me through the paces and then only to discover they just don't have this convenience for people.

I did pass the information on about recent JAVA flashback trojan concerns that you gave me. So many people were having trouble with it. I was glad to help.

See you soon.

Hi Heather,

Firstly, "WebMail" is a generic term so I don't know what service you are referencing.

Examples of services that offer webmall interfaces are Yahoo, HotMail, Gmail, MobileMe etc.

Secondly, I did my own testing and here are the results.

It is not the email service you use to SEND an email as much as it is the email program you use to view (read) any email.

I sent emails using both PLAIN TEXT FORMAT and RICH TEXT FORMAT to send emails to these services.

I included a URL with brackets as well as without brackets to test how webmail interface and how "smart" it is to recognizing a URL.

I WENT TO EACH OF THESE 3 SERVICES AND READ THE EMAILS VIA THEIR OWN WEBMAIL INTERFACE WHICH WOULD BE A TEST OF HOW THEY HANDLE THE URLS.

YAHOO MAIL - both formats had links were live and clickable as you want.

GMAIL -- both formats had links were live and clickable as you want.

HOTMAIL -- both formats had links were live and clickable as you want.

So, it seems to me that whatever advice you got as well as whatever you did to determine this issue was flawed and maybe you should try again.

Reminder, if you are sending from these 3 services TO your email program and none work, it is obvious, to me, that the problem is your email reading program, not with these services.

When I switched to plain text in Yahoo Mail...added the brackets to the address...and watched the now highlighted address fly.

You make a perfectionist really happy.

Thanks for the perfect suggestion.
